Frequently Asked Questions

Which Praxis exams am I required to take, and when should I take them?

BGSU does not require anyone to take Praxis I, so you will not have to worry at all about that one.

Praxis II is really two tests -- one over mathematics content knowledge and one over the general principles of how to teach. The mathematics content test should be taken in the junior year (courses such as CS 101, your mathematics elective, Calculus III (233), Geometry 402, History 411, and MATH 417 are not tested on the exam). It is recommended that a major take this exam either in November or January of the junior year. Beginning with freshmen or transfer students who entered in or after the Fall of 2003, successful passage of this mathematics content exam is required for admission to Methods and Student Teaching. The other Praxis II test (Principles of Teaching and Learning) is ordinarily taken in the senior year, at the conclusion of the Methods semester.

Praxis III is a performance assessment that is conducted during your first year of teaching, after having been hired for your first job -- it is not taken while still a student at BGSU.

To locate additional information on the Praxis exams, go to Blackboard, click on the "Community" tab, and then click on the "Adolescent/Young Adult/Secondary Ed Majors" link. You may also want to visit the homepage of Praxis at the ETS (Educational Testing Service) Web site, which is located at http://www.ets.org/praxis.
